Youre going to have trouble nailing the Crossroads sound, as its the
result of running a Marshall Superlead flat out. Itll be hard to get
that with a pedal and amp at neighbour-friendly level, unless you have a
very low-wattage valve amp. The key lies in overdriving the power stage
valves (whereas overdrive circuits or master volume controls are
designed to overdrive the preamp valves).
That said, though, there are some overdrive pedals out there which will
get you close, tone-wise. The Carl Martin Plexitone is great for
Marshall Plexi tones and has three levels of overdrive... crunch, high
gain and clean boost. Then theres the Radial Tonebone Plexitube, which
specialises in similar sounds, but has two independent channels and
masses of tone-shaping control. The Tonebone Trimode is (I think) even
more flexible, and would probably do the Plexi sound pretty well. If you
want to try the digital modelling route, the Digitech Crossroads pedal
has the live Crossroads sound in its set of 7 Clapton tones.
As for the Steely Dan track, that does sound like a pedal to me...
perhaps Elliott will be along shortly to tell us what he used... ;-)
