Hi all,
Im looking for an easy and simple tool to help me with practicing.
The type of thing I want to do is to play a sequence of chords, record
it and then mess around working out a solo to fit over it. Ive never
measured the lenght of time I need to record, typically a verse
sequence or a chorus sequence, so not too long. Im not really
looking for any other features as I use the delays built into my POd
XTLive when needed.

Anyone got any suggestions on stomp boxes or loopers which will do
this? Ive looked around the web and can see the following as
potentially offering what I want:-

Boss - DD3 (though I dont know how long it holds)
Digitech X Series digital delay (as with the DD3 - I dont know how
long it holds)
Line 6 DL4 - (seems like about 16 seconds therfore plenty)
Akai Headrush E2 - (probably the best option Ive seen so far)
Boss DD20 Loopstation - (certainly will do the job but over the top
for what I want)

anyone got any other suggestions? or anything I should try?

thanks in advance

Andrew S

I wonder if theyre not quite the sort of thing you need. Theyd all be
good for specifically looping type music, but for a practice tool, Id
go for something with a more rigid bar/beat structure. Something like a
basic sequencer with a drum machine function would work on your PC, or
you could look at some of the multi-effects units with built-in
recording/rhythm tools.

(Actually, I think the latter may restrict you to Digitech GNX units...
Im not certain)

While I could use my PC (for which Ive got various software apps
which will do the job, Im really looking for something much simpler.
I take the point Adrian made about having a drum/beat capability.
Ive got one of those things - called a metronome :-) This is more
for the working out harmonies, lead lines etc, just to be able to hear
what works and what doesnt. The Boss RC2 would undoubtedly do but
its a bit dearer than Id benn hoping to spend.

cheers

For your needs, Line6 DL4 (I have one and its great for basic looping)
or a Boss RC2.

I currently use a Boss RC-50, which is all the looping insanity one man
could need in a box unless you can afford/program a Gibson Digital
Exchoplex, in which case you need help/are the amazing Andre LaFosse :)

ta much Paul. I shall hunt down an RC2. I suspect that if you are
making your waves with an RC50 then they shall be quite awesome and
well beyond my needs (to say nothing of being beyond my ability
too...)

Boss RC2 demoed in a shop in Edinburgh and ordered last night from
Thomann. I do feel bad about not buying it from the shop who demoed
it to me, but their price was Ł142 and Thomann was Ł97 including
shipping.... (Andy Dempster - youre a very bad man!!!) From the
brief demo in the shop this is an awesome unit. (Adrian - its even
got a simple drum kit in it!) It will certainly do what I want, and
more. I wonder how long Thomann take to send stuff :-)

cheers
