Theyre not cheap but if you get one of these you can have pretty much any
kind of distortion -

They sound great!

For distortion (rather than overdrive), I like:

Boss MD-2 Mega Distortion - Does what it says on the tin!
Line6 Tonecore Uber Metal - See above
Coron Distortion 15 - Nice, but difficult to find
Boss OS-2 Overdrive/Distortion - Flexible

For a bit more flexibility:

Digitech DF-7 Distortion Factory - Good selection of sounds
Muza Medeli FD50 - More sounds than DF-7, more fiddly to use

Or just turn your amp up to 11 ;-)

If its a quick and cheap fix your after then I can recommend the
Behringer Vintage Tube Overdrive TO800. Great for driving an amp into
the crunchy overdriven AC/DC territory without getting to OTT.

cheers

It all depends if your going to use it to drive an already crunchy amp
or if the amp is going to be totally clean and the pedal is the only
source of grit.

Out of those clips I liked the Maxon the best.

if you just want a rock sound the MXR Zakk Wylde has got more tone
that a Boss DS-1 although its more expensive but its a similar type
unit.

If money is no object check out Xotic FX
http://www.prosoundcommunications.com/english/

the AC + sounds particularly nice, for really heavy stuff the BB +
preamp may be good

Out of all the ones Ive tried the ones that stand out are the MXR
microamp, the Xotic AC booster and the MXR wylde.

But....there are hundreds of boost, overdrive, distortion, metal
pedals out there. you may want to check out the line 6 stomp modeller
or just go round and try as many as you can.

in the end it depends what you can afford. but if money is no object
some of the best are Xotic, Keeley and Fulltone
