I am looking to buy a Baggs Para Acoustic DI and the saving buying from
the states seems huge (not surprising as they are made there), Ł80 as
opposed to Ł180 over here:
http://tinyurl.com/367xrc

Peanuts shipping cost too.

Looking at the recent threads on buying guitars from the US people
seemed to say that you can add on around 22% for VAT + duty... but then
I noticed someone else said that for other items (not guitars) you can
pay far more.

Any ideas what the duties would be on something like this? If its only a
few percent I am still getting this for almost half UK price.

PS If anyone has one to sell or knows of a very cheap UK supplier, give
us a shout.

You could always ask them to mark as a gift (some dont mind) and maybe
get away with it.
To be honest though, itll be somewhere around that sort of percentage.
Max 25-30% inc any fees. Min 0% if it slips through the net.
Itll probably end up costing you between Ł95 and Ł105 which is still=
a
big saving.

From experience (had a Traveler Escape EG1 delivered from the states 4 weeks
ago) Guitar marked as Birthday gift but still opened and checked by
customs, charged 3% import duty and then 17.5% vat on the total (inc import
duty) + about Ł10 handling fee by the courier company, all in all got a Ł370
guitar for Ł300 ish.
The original selling price in dollars was $470 as oposed to Ł370 over here,
not the biggest saving but still enough to pay for a pocket pod from the
change :-).
Check delivery method as if its coming USPS expect a 2 week wait.

Dont try. Customs guys are not dumb.
Gift top limit is GBP36, purchase is GBP7. Any bubba knows a padi is worth
GBP50 plus
My bet is this piece will come in at 2.7 per cent, added to price and
carriage, then vat on the total.
Call that number. UK stores do not want you to know it.

Well, it depends on the valuation
By gift I mean that the sellers marks as of no value.
Forget insurance on thins of this value anyway.
BTW: I just bought 2 expensive guitars from the states and one came in
with NO import duty. Slipped through the radar. Saved myself
about...er...Ł650

If its of any help I bought my Baggs Para Acoustic DI new from an eBay
seller in the States and saved myself a considerable amount even after
paying the import fees. I also bought a SansAmp Acoustic DI from the same
source. Later I sold the Baggs unit for the same as I paid for it. Both are
excellent but I found the Sansamp eq. to be a litle more flexible. I
certainly do it again for a small item like an effects pedal.
