Hi- I dont think I posted here before but Ive noticed this ng is relatively
sane so I can ask questions here I think without being traumatised.

Its a long story but someone is building a custom guitar for me in exchange
for some stuff- I wouldnt normally be able to afford such an indulgence. I
havent finally decided on the control configuration so Id like to ask for
some inspiration with that. What is is- think of a 25.5 scale set neck Les
Paul style guitar but with an unbound maple fretboard + maple neck (from
Warmoth to keep costs down), chambered alder body with carved maple cap with
rosewood binding at the front, and two Bill Lawrence pickups that are voiced
to sound like big fat single coils, look like some sort of P90 but are in
reality hum-cancelling and a bit more Fenderesque soundwise. (I have Biill
Lawrence pickups on three guitars allready and have no doubts about what they
can do- they really do seem to suit me.)

The usual control layout would be two tones and two volumes with a socket on
the side near the bottom. I would probably go for having the switch by the
pots.

Thats ok. But I also need to decide if thats the best way of doing it- I
have to make a final decision now on how many volume and tone pots to have.
There are advantages to having two of each, because I can set each pickup to
do something a bit different and its just a flick of a switch to change.

But I have an ESP Ltd Les Paul (almost) lookalike which has two volumes and
one tone and it works pretty well in practice, although I dont play it much.

But what is botherng me is this- there are a lot of guitars that now have
only ONE tone and volume control- this seems to be popular as a configuration
as PRS and boutique builders do this quite a lot now. Pensa, Suhr, Anderson
and more- the two-knob guitar is everywhere, and they are expensive guitars
so it is not an economy move. And I play Teles and have rarely felt the need
for more pots

Can anyone give me a suggestion of which they think is the better option- or
their personal preferences for two-pickup Gibsonesque-looking guitars? Im
still inclined towards two tones and two volumes right now and I think it
makes sense- but I have to decide now because wood will be worked very soon.

TIA for any suggestions.

Here goes:

One master volume, a tone for each pickup and a mix control pot.

I had that done on a guitar a long time ago and I think they must have used
the wrong pot- it kept both pickups on low unless you turned it all the way
one way or the other. You could only get maximum volume from one pickup at a
atime and that way you totally lost the other one at the same time.

If this works (when its done properly) like it does on a home stereo, ie
getting maximum volume from both in the centre position and turning either
way just turns one of them down, then that would be fine. Thanks, Ill look
into it.
