Hi,

Ive decided to investigate sprucing up one of my amp heads; one that
I use most and because of this its vinyl looking very scruffy now
although its plexi face is pretty much as it was when new.

Its a Kelly 50 watt head (to all intents and purpose a Selmer T n B
50). It might have have tried to do it myself but its got some white
piping on the front and Id be happier if it were done by a
professional.

BTW Im in the midlands.

Any recommendations gratefully received.

TIA

Tim

Thats an old AMP. Your right it was based on Selmer circuitry as the
guy behind Kelly, Flame, and a couple of other brands was ex Selmer.
Forget his first name, but his surname was Nolan. He went back to
Ireland in the early 70s as he sold more amps there, but then he seems
to have disappeared into obscurity unless someone knows better. I knew
him slightly (showing my age.)

If I recall correctly the piping is just squeezed between the ends of
the plywood sections of the amp case, so you may have a problem getting
piping inserted. If you dont want to do it yourself then you may
want to contact some of the specialist companies that supply vintage
gear and parts to see if they have any contacts to do it.

Personally I thought that the Kelly/Flame was a bit bassy and that was
the lead amp. (These were produced in Lead and Bass versions.) They
were ideal for disco, etc., however. those of my age know that in the
early to mid 60s there were more Selmer amps around in the smoke than
any others, though they were cheaper than others. The holy grail would
have been an AC30 and then of course the Marshall stack as they became
available.

a slightly off the wall suggestion - how about trying a firm who
recover car seats? They may be able to do something to help. btw -
Ive never tried this, but it seems like something worth trying.

cheers

...yes, there was a company that did coverings, piping etc which I
used a few times, many years ago - Adam Hall I think it was. I
havent checked them out but its not a bad idea at all.

As far as the amps sound is concerned, it has lead and bass channels
and the lead channel is perfect for my needs - not too much gain and
nice and warm. . I only need 1 channel as I use a few pedals for
distortion/overdrive and the Kelly suits this application really
well. Packs a punch as well and sounds best when partnered with one
of my Marshall 2 x 12 1936 cabs! Its been revalved a few times since
new and has been regularly serviced so its doing all right for an amp
thats nearly 40 years old.

Cheers

I would have thought that sort of company would be hard to find. I only
know of a couple and theyr expensive. OTOH your local domestic
upholstery company would probably be able to do that. Its not a
terribly difficult job; Ive covered numerous cabinets. The piping is
fairly easy to find.

There used to be a small family business at Fighting Cocks in
Wolverhampton, that recovered car seats.
