With all this talk of classic Les Paul/Marshall valve tone I started
wondering about getting, or at least experimenting with a Rangemaster
clone effect pedal.

They seem pretty expensive to me, so any reccomendations on a decent and
ideally inexpensive clone?

Cheers.

I tried a few of the BSM pedals a while ago (they do Rangemaster and
other treble booster clones) and they were all excellent.

Then theres the D*A*M Red Rooster (http://www.stompboxes.co.uk) which
is based on the Rangemaster, but has a variable frequency boost. Its
one of the best pedals Ive ever tried... typical D*A*M high quality.
Theyre a bugger to get hold of, though.

The really sad thing is the treble booster pedals are just about the
simplest circuits in the world. One transistor, 4 resistors, 3 capacitors,
one pot. I used to churn them out in the 70s and sell the assembled bits
ready for putting a box of the buyers choice. I charged a fiver, and that
had a huge profit margin. IIRC I used the Rangemaster circuit.

What to buy? How much money have you got? BSM seem to do a huge range, all
seem expensive in the extreme.

Thanks Adrian - yes, scarce and not very cheap seems to be the standard
thing with these. But then, it seems like its mainly just small businesses
turning them out for the most part.

About 2 minutes work found the following :

Arghh - maybe you should pick up where you left off as a sideline. :)

Ive seen a lot about this transistor vs that transistor (OC44 vs OC44K)
and get the tin can ones not the leaky, noisy (black) glass ones. Does
that have any credibility, or is it just people saying ours is better
than theirs?

Id be keen to hear any thoughts you have especially as you have actual
experience in the construction side.

Officially none at this point, but hey, I aspire to be a blues
guitarist, so Ill try and improvise. :)

Have a look round the Geofex site I posted : Theres an article on
there on how to test a germanium transistor for leakage.

Thanks for that, the pdf made an interesting read, although the technical
stuff is over my head. Unfortunately making my own isnt an option as I
dont have the required skills.
