If youve read this far, youll know what BOINC is :-)

http://boinc.berkeley.edu/

Ive been BOINCing and doing DC for a decade now. I like the community feel
of it all, I like the science, I like an excuse to buy new PCs every now
and then ;-)

Having had numerous invites from numerous teams, I thought Id find a team
connected to guitars or music. There arent any :-(

So, if a few of us happy/hapless strummers fancy forming a team with a view
to promoting our dirty habit to the rest of the geeks out there, Id be
happy to join, or even form one. I wouldnt want to join a team that
persued some of the rather pointless BOINC comps, nor would I create a team
with that remit.

Just looking to have a bit of fun, do some good, be part of an online
community that shared an interest in DC and the guitar :-)

So far, so good, but you should be aware that such activity is not without
cost:

I know :-(

Im probably burning a kilowatt/hour on these machines. I turned the
radiator off in the room a few months ago - No need for extra heat!

Theres also a school of thought that running machines flat-out 24/7
reduces their lifespan. But the only machines Ive seed die so far are
laptops (which really arent up to the job anyway).

Also, you probably wouldnt want to run BOINC on machines used for audio -
Soaking up every last available CPU cycle and randomly accessing the hard
drive and network probably wont help your recording software.

So, not very good for your carbon footprint, either?

Just plant a tree or something - that seems to be what people are
doing now.

Carbon offsetting.....nice work if you can get it.

Given that only 3% of CO2 is man-made, I dont think Ill worry :-)

Funny that a couple of the BOINC projects are about climate change. The
greenies must be torn ;-)

As for trees, I put them in as quick as the neighbours or council cut them
down. Last ones in were a Sequoia and a Giant Redwood :-)

Both of those species grow so quickly you might learn to regret it!

Ah, the old Distributed Computing! Used to do a bit of that, in the days
of Win95 ISTR. I even installed the client on some school PCs and
transferred blocks on floppy - the school wasnt connected to the
internet in those days!

It would have got interesting now, if Id installed it on one of our
dual Xeon servers...
