Eh up,
Ill show my total lack of electronic knowledge with this but here goes.
The volume pot on my squier strat has gone kaput (scratchy noises, cutting
out) and as I only ever use the SD Hot Rails in the bridge I quite fancy
having it as a single pick up guitar. If I strip all the other pickups and
the switch out could I use one of the redundant tone pots (500k stamped on
back) as a volume pot and wire the hot rails direct to that?

cheers

No, tone pots are usually lin types, whilst volume pots are log.

Just flush the pot with switch cleaner (Maplin) for a quick fix.

Sorry if my reply was incorrect, but I assumed it would be linear as in
other audio applications. Can someone explain why it would need to be a
log pot please?

John.

I dont really know why it would differ for guitars but I do know all
the guitar tone pots Ive seen have been log taper.
Some non-guitar tone pots sweep between two different value capacitors
connected to either end of the track. For that sort of arrangement a
linear pot would make more sense. That arrangement is used in some
basic valve amps. With a guitar, the tone pot just dumps high
frequencies to ground. In effect your just turning down the highs. It
makes sense that you would be best using a log pot to match the way
the human ear hears changes in sound pressure levels.

Notwithstanding which is best, experience tells me that the pots in a Squier
Strat are all the same type.
