I dont really know why it would differ for guitars but I do know all
the guitar tone pots Ive seen have been log taper.
Some non-guitar tone pots sweep between two different value capacitors
connected to either end of the track. For that sort of arrangement a
linear pot would make more sense. That arrangement is used in some
basic valve amps. With a guitar, the tone pot just dumps high
frequencies to ground. In effect your just turning down the highs. It
makes sense that you would be best using a log pot to match the way
the human ear hears changes in sound pressure levels.
