Hi all,

After a couple of highly informative and helpful threads here I have been
investigating various valve amps whenever I can.

Ive not had the opportunity of trying a JCM 800 (as advised) yet, but
while my AC30 was being looked at, the guy let me try a couple of other
amps he had in. One was a 100 watt Marshall head (are they always that
big?!) with a master volume. Now, while there was undeniably plenty of dirt
with the master volume turned down, it was pretty yucky, muffled dirt, and
it seemed to me that when the master volume was turned up and the power
amp valves started to work, the sound opened up, and the amp began to
sing. This was achived without a big increase of volume, but Im a bit
fuzzy on the details.

Is that standard though? Is the tone you get with the master volume turned
down generally lacking so much of the amps normal tone?

Im hoping to try a 50 watt Vintage Modern combo soon, which has these
detail and body controls for the master volume, so maybe that will
suit me better.

Any general thoughts?

All the best,

Well, I could tell you were all eager for more details :) so heres what
happened with the Marshall Vintage Modern 50 watt combo.......

I decided to do things properly and took my Les Paul down to the shop.

I was actually very impressed with the amp. On the lead side of things,
its definitely the place for me to be. Theres drive early on, and more
sustain than Im used to. It ticked the box of producing a nice overdrive
sound at relatively low volume, and this was using the low gain circuit,
with the mid boost on. A couple of times the amps sound seemed to be
urging me on to places I wanted to go but had not had access to before.
That was encouraging. It was able to produce a much cleaner or much
dirtier sound than was my preference which suggests plenty of flexibility.
Big chord wise the amp sounded nearly as nice as my Vox, and I couldnt
really fault it there.

Im seriously thinking of selling my AC30 and getting this, because as
much as I love the AC30 (especially on the chord side of things) the
Marshall seemed to be much closer to where I want to be on lead (my
priority) and acceptably close with chords.
