Hi guys,
Just recorded a quick jam with my Tonelab and Cakewalk Powerstudio...
Heres the link:

http://www.btinternet.com/~diddymouse/messyme.mp3

Im practicing this way by looking at different things i can do and stuff to
improve on...
My next purchase will be a bass guitar and was wondering what would be the
best option for this sort of music?

Im only looknig to spend around Ł200,its just for laying down bass parts..

Any advice and comments on the tune welcome,
regards.
David

Well it all depends on just how seriously you take your hobby . If
your into getting down ideas and having fun with other projects well i
dont think you really need to spend anywhere near Ł200 on a Bass .
Thing is , and its only my opinion , Bass is one of those things that
doesnt seem to have to be of any significant quality as long as it
plays and feels good . like intonation and action . Others will of
course dispute this , but on the evidence i have gained using cheap
Bass guitars in home recording situations , ive found this the case .
Obviously using Ł200 plus instruments will be better than Ł80 ones ,
but not as much as you think . Were not talking Chinese Strats v US
Fenders here . Fact is Bass is something that can sound good at any
price in your situation .

My Bass is a Wesley Jazz Bass Copy . It cost me Ł25 . Its strings are
nearly 2 year old . It does rattle a little mainly because im a sloppy
player , but it really does the job .I put it on your little tune
straight into a Behringer V-Amp which sounds great on Bass too .

For my money the sound of the bass is very important. However, if all
you want is wobbly bottom end so you can call it bass, and you cant
really play bass yet, and you dont really know a lot about sound
engineering then youre right ... any bass will do to get you started.

If you plan to learn to play and you develop your ability to record
stuff well then sooner or later youll need something that sounds good
- not just a flabby noise an octave below the guitar. Thats not to
say that you need to spend shed loads of dosh ... but the same is true
of guitars in general.

Noone here would recommend you buy a chinese strat. Many would
recommend a Yamaha Pacifica - for sound quality, playability and
durability. For my money its precisely the same situation with bass
guitars. Buy a nasty cheap piece of rubbish and youll be throwing
money away. Spend a little more time and effort and you could buy
something that does all that you want and will inspire you to play
better.

Cheers,
Steve W

Thanks for the advice..!
I was looking at the Yamaha RBX270 to start me off on...which is about Ł209
for the left handed version..

http://www.guitarbitz.com/856.htm

I like the colour too, makes a change from black!!
I think this would be good as a starting point to practice with...

Any comments on this bass then?
thanks,
Dave

I got a second-hand Squier P-bass off eBay, 70 quid (with a gigbag), and I
am more than happy with it.

About amps, I can say from personal experience say that through a Line6 POD
it sounded ok, but through a POD X3 which as proper bass amps (modelled, of
course) it sounded a lot better.

Cheers,
Kari

I also have a Squier P-Bass and like it a lot. If you are recording on
the cheap your best bet is to get a DI box ... you can get a Behringer
DI120 for around Ł20 ... and mine have served me well.

You could also improve the quality of your results by reading up on
the various articles on the subject from Sound On Sound magazine. Go
to www.soundonsound.com and search for bass / bass guitar or whatever.

Cheers,
Steve W
