Richard Letts was the UK Usenet co-ordinator responsible, as part
of the UK Usenet Committee, for the actual creation of uk.* newsgroups
on news servers (well someone had to do it!). He was authorised to
generate the relevant newgroup control code that was neccessary for
creating a new newsgroup on all the Usenet servers on the planet,
provided it went through the relevant discussions first and had a
relavent charter. This process was introduced around 1995. Prior to
that, folks just generated their own news groups as they saw fit,
providing they owned a news server. This is why some groups (like
uk.misc) dont seem to fit the hierarchy and dont have a charter.

I didnt get online until about March 97, and first had a look at the
(tumbleweed filled) ukmg fairly soon after. I feel I should catch up on
the 14 months of posts Ive missed... ;-)

Browsing the threads from those first few months, its interesting to
see just how few names I recognise. Theres an early appearance from
The Nit Nurse in 1996, and David R Barlow appears the following
year, but on the whole, the Inner Scrotum took a while to come on
board...

Richard Letts is/was somebody high up in the UK usenet scene, so it
seems to be Alex Shaw who is our founding father.

Ive googled for Alex Shaw and come up short.

Meanwhile........
