Hi all,

I think Ive come to the conclusion that its time I got an Ibanez JEM.

Just a couple of quick questions...
Did they have any years where the quality dipped... i.e. are they
consistently ok or are earlier/later ones better?
Apart from the cosmetic changes have there been any big design alterations
like trem or wood type changes?

Last thing, if anyone knows has seen any nice ones going for a reasonable
price Id appreciate if you could let me know.

Thanks
John P.

Owning a newer 7VSBL and an older 77GMC I can say both are top quality
guitars, so not much difference in the quality between old and new Jems
apart from wear and tear of course on secondhand ones. Additionally newer
Jems now have the All Access Neck Joint for easier access to the upper
frets, http://jemsite.com/axes/htm features/neckjoint.htm.

You can find all the info you need on Jemsite at
http://jemsite.com/axes/htm features/spec.htm.

Mr Vais tastes have changed since the original Jems now prefering an Alder
bodies DiMarzio Evolution pickupd guitar to the Basswood DiMarzio PAF Prod
of the past. Also the older Jem necks feel a wee bit thinner that the new
ones.

Dunno know of any at the moment but EBay is always a good place to check out
as well as the Jemsite forum.

Cheers
Mark.

Yeah, the neck joint changed in the early 90s from a clasic strat style
slab bolt-on to what Ibanez refer to as the AANJ - All Access Neck Joint -
slightly more rounded out, offset neck bolt. Tons of pics and the full
jennifer on jemsite.com

The Floyd-licensed trem is now on its third update.... aethetics and minor
niceties aside I think its safe to class them pretty much as similar

Hrm. Jem pricing is a mystery. There are the odd bargains to be had in newer
ones, older ones appear to lose little over new list and some even
appreciate. This may seem like a sweeping statement but for many guitars
that are <15 years old I dont think tehre are many that have gone up in
value.

Ive got a couple of RG models and I think the all access joint would be
prefereable... so long as the trem is an edge Itll do the job I suppose...

Ive noticed this...
While doing a quick trawl on the net to get an idea of what dealers are
charging... GAK are doing them from Ł1150 and Ive seen loads and loads of
used ones for more.... The hard part as usual is the difficulty in finding
a good deal from a reputable seller..

Sometimes I really wish I lived in a town with a decent guitar shop... (but
with the amount of gear I buy it might be for the best ;-)

Cheers

In private sales, you should be able to get a decent-condition DY from
about Ł650 and an FP from Ł700 (battered) to Ł900 (near-mint). The other
models tend to cost more, as they made fewer.

Well, food for thought for you... if Im not wrong ( I may be, it has been
known) most of the passion and warfare album was honest to goodness old
fashioned non-AANJ jemfare... so, does it make a difference in the right
hands?

Hang out at Jemsite.com, check their classifieds you may strike lucky.
Failing that you may get one around and about in a music store thats been
traded in and due to the very special nature of the jem may be beyond their
comfort zone. Ebay is a great place to sell one, less of a good place to
look for a bargain.

Having said that, the less financially astute in this world may well be a
teensy bit skint at this time of year and could be looking to offload some
gear and liquidate their assets!
