I had a HD crash (well a faulty HD r/w buffer) and need to install a few
utilities. I was trying to install Acrobat Raeder 6, all 16Mb of it when it
informed me that it was a corrupt file and to try again later. Seeing as
its already over an hour to DL on a wet string connection, I was looking
for something smaller than the full reader, and see that Adobe has an
archive of older versions.

So the question is which version is a reasonable trade-off on features and
size, compared to the text only version? I cant recall viewing any text
PDF files recently, why bother with a text PDF, unless its already archived
that way with PS features I suppose?

This is where PC magazine cover-CDs (many of which contain library of
free utilities like Acrobat Reader, IE, OE, Winzip, etc, every month) come
into their own.

Acrobat Reader 6 is not only big, its *very* slow to load once installed.
Id give it a miss if I were you. Versions 4 or 5 should still be ok - V5
had one or two problems, but is (mostly) usable, and much faster to load.

Alternatively you could use another package altogether to read PDF files.
One classic one is ghostcript, which is a *nix package for which ports for
Windoze exist.

Thanks Steve. Ill give V5 a go. IIRC one version tried to be some sort of
media palyer, invoking IE at every opportunity, and which took me ages to
get rid of.

I was cleaning up disk space on my OS X Powerbook the other day, and
decided to delete Acrobat, since OS X Preview renders PDFs just as well,
starts faster, and is generally much less of a pain.

I got 70M back!

Im surprised no-one has mentioned ghostscript yet. It works very
well on my windows laptop converting postscript to pdf.

Go here http://www.tnk-bootblock.co.uk/prods/misc/index.php download Adobe
reader speedup, run it, it unloads a hell of a lot pf plugins that are not
normally needed when using Adobes reader for normal applications, used to be
about 8 seconds to load it up on my pc it is now only about 3.
