hi all,

just a few words about last nights gig in Edinburgh. The running order
was :

Tony McPhee - came on, sang 5 songs and went off again. He was dreadful.
Out of tune, out of time, very poor indeed.

Edgar Winter Band - what an amazing showman EW is. he played for about
50 minutes and was thouroughly entertaining throughout. I couldnt make
out the names of his band members when he introduced them, but they were
excellent musicians too. The guitar player looked like hed just
stepped out of Linkin Park or some other Nu-Metal band! I think Edgar
played some great sax, but the sound was so poor that it was really hard
to pick it out. Free Ride and Frankenstein were given a work out too. He
closed with a very bluesy version of Tobacco Road (note to self - must
find this one....)

Alvin Lee - came on with his trademark red 335 (only this one had an
interesting tremolo/tuning bridge tailpiece) with 4 x 4x12s and two
Marshall heads behind him. His band is a 3 piece. Alvin played
incredibly effortless fast fluid guitar solos all night. I doubt if
many other guitar players could keep up with him for speed and fluidity.
He played some of the TYA classics - Here Me Calling, Goin Home and
also played a very melodic While My Guitar Gently Weeps on an acoustic
guitar. He was joined by Edgar Winter for a encore where they went
through every rock ad roll classics you can think of. AS with EW, AL
suffered from a crap PA mix. The only time his guitar really cut through
was during the solo acoustic numbers.

All in all, a good gig although it was for me ruined by very poor sound.
I cant believe in this day age of sophisticated PA systems that its
not possible to get a good clear sound. Or have artists stopped doing
proper soundchecks?

If you thing fast guitar playing started with Vai and Satriani, then go
along and see how Alvin Lee does. Hes not half bad for a pensioner!

cheers

Thanks for the review Andrew!

TS McPhee was a bit of an Icon when I were a lad with the amazing Thank
Christ for the Bomb Groundhogs album, and the fact that I went to school in
Wishaw with his cousin (Graeme Mearns -- still playing great acoustic
blues).

Another old mate of mine is now playing bass with McPhee in the
reincarnation of Groundhogs -- namely one Dave Anderson (the bass player in
Hawkwind before Lemmy, and also formerly of Amun Duul, Brinsley Schwarz, and
that ilk...)

Was McPhee out of it, past it, just not interested, or a combination?

I think the gig was at the Usher Hall? Usually the acoustics there are OK
for rock & blues...

I wish I had a fiver for every time Ive felt like approaching the sound
engineers and demanded, What the fuck are you guys getting PAID for???!!!

Anyway -- whos up for the Eddie Allen and Joe Walsh Sound Control demos I
privately e-mailed last week?

Regards,

IWP

Oh yes. Been there. Except I tend to actually ask them, rather than just
feel like it. Its a soapbox of mine - Im offended by paying money to see
someone and then having it ruined by some deaf c**t on the desk.

There are some wonderful sound engineers out there. Sadly, not enough to go
round.

Interesting to read that.. I passed on going to see Alvin in Oxford recently
because while I really like his fast blues playing of old, and fast playing
in general, his website seemed to suggest his main passion these days is
50s rock and roll, which I have a very limited stomach for. Sounds like it
might have been worth stomaching the music to watch him play.

Just re-read this one... surely I get some sort of award for the most
blatant (pathetic?) name-dropping, or something?

As I was saying to Mick Abrahams - ex Tull and Blodwyn Pig - and Terry
Marshall - son of *the* JIm Marshall in the pub the other night,
theres nothing worse than blatant name-dropping.
