Im sure someone here can tell me the difference. I know a bit but not
enough.
I want to get an amp which, for the time being, will double for both, as
I cant afford much right now - just spent money on a guitar, daughter
has new bass coming and son has just decided he wants to be a drummer
(in addition to being an ice hockey goalie, the most expensive position
on the team).
Ive played for years, but I have to confess Ive never had a proper
guitar amp, Ive always managed with various PA amps which doubled up
duties with my disco gear.
So wha do I need to know?

You can use one amp to do both so long as youre using full range speakers
and a amp emulator as a preamp for the guitar.
Ill qualify that a bit... you the full range speakers need to be able to
cope with the bass guitar and I prefer solid state amps for bass. Its
especially good if youve got an active bass.
Otherwise, the differences are in the preamp voicing, bypass capacitors
before the phase inverter (and elsewhere in the circuit) output transformer
(for bass guitar especially) how the negative feedbacks used... loads of
factors but the biggest being that bass amps are a LOT more powerful so they
can compete... 350W is minimal for bass...

I was thinking initially in terms of a combo.

Of course, you dont usually want to overdrive a bass but you do with
lead. I follow that.

Her new one is active - Vintage Metal Wraith.

Hmm.. I come from an age where 100 watts was a lot and a single Carlsbro
Stingray used to draw complaints from the cleaners at the other end of
the school! But I do see what you mean. Its not going to be anything
like that anyway; as yet were only talking practice/garage levels and
anything more will, for now, be slaved through the PA.
Interestingly we managed to get a decent enough sound last week in the
schools Stars in their Eyes concert, using four ageing 1x12 10w cabs
with mixed drivers, a 50w mosfet amp that I built myself for the guitars
slaved though my trusty old NJD PA110 which also took the bass & mics.
Not sophisticated but it did the job and sounded as good as anyone
elses. Perhaps I was just more careful with the levels!

Looking around there are fewer bass amps available s/h, and I was
thinking about getting a half-decent lead combo for now, bearing in mind
its not going to have to handle concert-volume bass right now, then
looking for a good bass amp later, when the funds recover a bit. I know
this will get expensive later, but she does have a really good (and
trained) singing voice so perhaps shell be able to sing her way through
college!

Just beware of false economy... 200W wasnt enough for my garage...

Are you deaf by any chance? ;-)

A lot of power is desirable in a bass amp but at the moment my bass rig is
just an Electar 60W combo. When my band rehearsed the 60W combo could keep
up with the drummer and a guitarist who werent eactly trying to keep the
noise levels down. Admittedly my amp was on 10 and the guitarist was only
using a 30W Electar combo but for practice/small rehearsals, Id say 350W
is way over the top.

If I was gigging then it would be a different matter but the setup Ive
described was enough to play at hearing impairing volume in a small
rehearsal room.

Not me. I was wearing the earplugs...
The 400W PA was limiting all the time...
yes, the drummer was from the metal scene....
50W 2x12 guitarist....
depends on your bandmates...

youre likely to fry that 60W amp - seriously... and 7-8dB isnt thaaat much
of a difference.

As responses from all points have shown, your ideas of how much power is
necessary in a bass amp are best described as individual. I have a long
history of working with loud bands, including as a bass player, and your
numbers seem way over the top to me.

If youre a bass player in a rock band, you are by definition a moron.
