Hi folks! Just got back from the first full practice with my nephews band -
full stage sound gear today! God! It was LOUD ..... wheres those ear plugs?

Got the full demo tapes (inc. all songs for the gig) on Christmas day and it
has been very noisy in my house ever since. On Boxing Day PU died on my
P-Bass copy :-( but had the fortune to bump into someone with a Westfield PB
which I played around with and decided it was infinitely better than my 70s
vintage copy so I bought it (well, Ł40 cant complain). Im actually now in
the market for another bass ... but that will be a later thread.

So, I turned up in Torquay with the Westfield and sore fingers .... Im not
used to 8 hours practice a day. The lads are really up for this debut and
having spent half a day playing with them, it is time they played it! They
are well prepared musically ... a few rough edges but the know the music
well. I got on well with the drummer and we managed to sort of gel at times
:-)

It was an excellent session, but I still have an awful lot of work to do
yet! But Im more confident of being able to pull this off now that weve
had this session. Despite it basically being a thrash gig, there are 2
slower numbers ... one of em quite bluesy .... so I can groove a bit if I
want , YIPPEE!

I was set up wit a Trace Elliott 350W head and 4x12 cab for this session,
but I have a choice for the gig .... the rig I just used, Orange 400W with 2
4x12 cabs (this is vintage late 70s and kit that Im familiar with ... my
heart is tending towards the Orange if for nothing else than nostalgia value
and that wunnerful tube sound) or a Peavy with 1 4x12 and 1x18 cab (this is
where my head seems to be heading) any suggestions as to which way I should
go would be appreciated, even if ultimately I ignore all advice and just go
with an impulse decision the day before. We have another full sound
rehearsal next week and Ill use the Orange that day.

Well, thats about it at the moment .... the lads are so wound up they need
to get this gig under their belts tomorrow..... and I feel I need another 6
months! But Hell! Its only RocknRoll :-)

Take care

Grunt (bassing through rose-tinted glasses)

Hi Russell, I very nearly replied that I havent the foggiest. It wasnt
until your post that I realised that Id never asked them what they called
themselve! LOL
Actually, the band is called Tacticus (er currently) tis a new band about
to perform their individual and collective first ever gig. I cant tell you
much about them as Im not really a band member, Im the uncle of the lead
guitarist and Ive been duped into playing bass for this gig as their
bassman walked out on them a couple of weeks ago.
At the moment all I know about this gig is that it is in a rented hall,
about 3-400 capacity, I dont even know whether it is in Torquay, Paignton
or Newton Abbott - but then Im just a low noter LOL. They seem to be
selecting their audience (probably a good idea for your first ever gig) by
supplying tickets via the underground. If you know the right people you
can get a ticket, if you know the right people you are likely to appreciate
their efforts ..... well, thats the theory. Cant be that subterranean,
cos they seem to have sold a couple of hundred so far! Hmmm... I wonder if
theyve booked a group of lap dancers as support to have cleared so many
tickets? ;-)
Anyway, if you fancy it, they play Thrash Metal at, as Ive now found out to
my cost, trouser splitting volumes! Ask around, you may be lucky, or unlucky
enough to get a ticket. I cant help, I live at the other end of the region.

If you make it, say Hi! Ill be the old fart with the grey hair, crap bass
and smoking fingers! Ouch!

Grunt
