Could it be that they are getting older and losing their hair, and dont
want folk to notice?

LOL. I like all those suggestions but there must be a real reason. So
many do it.

Possibly as an anti knock device for mic stands.

They also may absorb the higher end audio frequencies and may well act as a
feedback inhibitor, but I doubt it...

I remember Curved Air hanging them over the front of their speaker stacks to
make the sound less harsh...

Ive seen things you people wouldnt believe.
Barbeques on fire by the chalets past the castle headland
I watched the gift shops glitter in the darkness off the Newborough gate
All these moments will be lost in time, like icecream on the beach
Time for tea.

most stages that live bands play on are wooden. This makes the bass
drum slip when being played, espesially fast bass patterns, also it
absorbs some of the sound (some pubs/clubs are in residential area and
have noise orders with cut out microphones in them)

this may or may not be the reason so dont quote me onit lol >.<
We all walk alone in this life, but lets play guitar on the way :D

Thats why roadies carry nails.

If you look at a bass drum it has holes for the nails...
