The wife and I are having a disagreement over whether Slayer are
musical or not. She is a classically trained royal academy graduate
and I am a self taught average guitar player. Her musically knowledge is
far greater than mine will ever be and most of the time we agree on what
music is actually rubbish or doesnt work.

The exception is Slayer, I think they are tuneful and musical, she
doesnt. Im referring mostly to South of Heaven and Seasons in the Abyss.

What do you all think?

She wants me to get some sheet music so she can look at the vocal lines
and general structure, is there a good website where I could download
the proper music?

Obviously I would love to win this argument

Cheers

Ian

Tuneful is a loaded word, but theyre certainly musical. They create
music. Your wife might not like that music, but shes not in charge of
the definition of what music is ;-)

Being slightly serious (this is very difficult for me) I dont think
theres much she could prove from a transcription of a Slayer song. It
will contain some sort of observable structure, just like Mozart,
Stockhausen, Louis Armstrong or Pinky & Perky. And Kerry King could have
them all in a fight.

I suspect that no one is in charge of such a definition, and,
moreover, its effectively impossible to define. Much like the
broader term art.

The wife and I are having a disagreement over whether Slayer are
musical or not.

I think Slayer are very musical, their music suits the subject material
perfectly, using minor sounding scales and occasional chromatic notes to
build tension*. The songs are also chock full of interesting time signatures
and tempo changes, all adding to the image conveyed by the lyrics. I saw
them live at Donington in 92 and was blown away by the sheer power of it
all.

Fred

*probably explained that wrong, but i know what i mean :)
