Hi

I have a 87 SG2000s and it is a beautiful (if rather heavy) guitar
with fantastic workmanship.

I have though, always wanted a Gibson ES 3355 but am seriously
impressed with Yamahas SA2200 version (~Ł900 discount as opposed to
Ł1500-ish for the Gibo). BUT after reading all the user review posts
on Harmony Central where users claim the SA2200 is BETTER and knowing
from my ownership of the aforesaid SG this could be likely, and being
told by Mick Taylor of Guitarist that the Gibsons suffer from build
quality issues, I am thinking the Yamaha route is much more
sensible....?

However I am now thing that *even more sensible* maybe the cheaper
Yamaha SA500 with a pair of original Gibson pickups swapped in!

Currently I can pick up a SA500 in sunburst for Ł199 and then have
buckets of dosh left for a choice of classic Gibson 57 humbuckers
slotted in. This will give that impressive Gibo tone But should have
he added advantage of Yamahas superior build quality and finish. And
I will have best part of a Ł1000 in my pocket still !!

Wadya think??

If you change the pickups , remember the Yammy has Fender spacing , But its
worth going for the SA2200 , better than a 335 ? well , just different ,
not as warm and woody, but one hell of a guitar.

A friend has an SA800 which he paid maybe Ł300 used for. Great guitar t=
o
play. Fabulous. The original pickups were odd. They werent typical
Yamaha ones either (which I like) they were made with an odd magnet
material for some reason (trying to be clever!) Sounded harsh. Anyway,
he changed them for some P90s in humbucker format. Anyway, its a
wonderful guitar to play and now sounds fabulous. Great guitars. Older
Yamaha are bargains on the second hand market. Any early yammy 335 model =

will be excellent.
On another note, I have a Maya ES335 which is in my book much closer to
a Gibson. Its a high quality copy of a 335 and has that woody mid range =

tone that I like on a 335. I have put duesenberg pickups in it (P90 on
the neck and Humbucker on the Bridge) and its SUPERB (even compared to
a friends older Gibson 335 ) Not to be compared with cheaper maya copies.=

Another wonderful 335 copy to look for is the Ibanez LR10 Lee Ritenour =

model. Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard, nice pickups, fab playability. It =

was the most expensive Ibanez semi in their line up at the time and is
well worth the money they fetch. Hard to find though.

I always preferred Yamaha SG types to Gibsons . The build quality is
superior in every way . In the 70s you could snap em up cheap , but
once Carlos started using them , the price shot up .
