I can recommend the Boss ME-50. Ive had mine for a few weeks now and cant
fault it for what I need it for. I play metal mainly but jam with blues,
jazz and rock musicians too and have found manual mode suffices for the
subset of effects I need for each genre.
Im not a big fan of modelling which was one of the reasons I decided to try
the Boss in the first place. The ME-50 doesnt try to be anything other a
few effects in a single box and does it very well.
Its the first multi-effects unit Ive owned that I feel comfortable playing
at jams. Ill have to wait a few more weeks to find out how it works out
for a gig.
A side note: I use a Boss MT-2 for my metal distortion but find it a little
too tweakable and a bit of a hassle at times. As youd expect the MT-2
setting on the ME-50 isnt as tweakable which is actually a plus in this
case.
